Joseph proudly served his country through a distinguished military career, serving two years in the United States Army followed by 30 years in the United States Coast Guard, retiring with the rank of Warrant Officer. His dedication, discipline, and commitment to service were admired by all who knew him.
Above all else, Joseph was a devoted family man who always expressed the importance and value of taking care of family. He is survived by his brother, John Gorkowski, and sister-in-law, Rosanne Gorkowski; his daughter, Laura Gorkowski Amador; his sons, Edward Gorkowski and Mathew Gorkowski; his beloved grandchildren, Austin Amador, Alyssa Amador, Aidan Amador, and Layla Gorkowski; and his great-grandson, Atlas Amador. He also leaves behind many loving cousins, nephews, great-nephews, and a niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Margaret Gorkowski.
Joseph found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved spending time outdoors and taking walks around nearby lakes in Leland. He especially cherished playing mini golf with his children and grandchildren, creating memories filled with laughter and love. He never missed an opportunity to enjoy an episode of the TV show Jeopardy! and was an avid runner. In March 1997, he proudly achieved a lifelong goal by completing a marathon — a moment that reflected his determination and perseverance.
Those who knew Joseph will remember him for his intelligence, meaningful conversations, and thoughtful advice. He had a quirky sense of humor that brought laughter to those around him, along with a caring heart, deep compassion, and remarkable selflessness. His thoughtfulness toward others never went unnoticed, and the love he gave so freely will continue to live on through all who knew him.
A future burial at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date determined by the cemetery.
