

Mrs. Potter, the eldest of five children, was born March 1, 1929, in Bladenboro to the late Ethel Lee Gooden and William R. Hammonds.
A cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she loved having her family close and enjoyed hosting large holiday gatherings. She was also deeply devoted to her church, where she taught Sunday school and was a very active member, serving on various committees. A woman who touched everyone she met, she will be especially missed during Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations, and family reunions.
Mrs. Potter is survived by her husband of 65 years, James Sedric Potter Sr.; daughters, Sherry A. Spencer and Yvonne P. Caryle, both of Wilmington; sons James S. Potter, Jr. of Wilmington, and J. Alan Potter of Carthage, NC; two brothers, Roy Lee Hammonds and Donald Ray Hammonds; two sisters, Carolyn Whitley and Merline Gupton; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and countless extended family and friends, too numerous to name.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the Masonboro Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM with Pastor Gordon Wright officiating.
A graveside service will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 1311 Shipyard Boulevard, Wilmington, NC, 28412.
