Once in College, Kay was spotted by the track coach at Yankton College and courted onto the track team. Kay achieved the milestone of an all-time state record in the 220 yard dash of 20.9 seconds which was the 3rd fastest time in the United States in 1956. Kay was later invited to play football on full scholarship at the University of Minnesota for the remainder of his college years. In 1958 he was drafted into the military where he excelled at football and was invited to the All-Service Team. Upon fullfilling his military obligation, Kay eventually went to the Saint Louis Cardinals where a broken leg ended his football career.

Our family will greatly miss Kay whom we called "Gramps"! Kay met Chad while working at Landfall Country Club and they shared their passion for the game of golf. Kay would spend some time each day talking to Chad to get to know him and chat about sports. Kay and BJ learned that Chad was a bachelor with no family in town so they would invite Chad over for many of BJ's delicious home cooked dishes and Kay would grill a fine cut tuna steak, steak, or his famous beer can chicken! When Kay and BJ found out Chad had a girlfriend they said invite her over for dinner. So I first met Kay and BJ at their home for dinner. I will never forget Kay took one look at me and said, "well, you aren't the girlfriend Chad had over here last week!" Everyone started laughing and I quickly learned Kay was a jokester. He especially loved to tease or trick me because I always fell for it. I had made the mistake of telling Kay I found a lizard under my pillow and how scared I was. So you can only guess what he did next! The pranks went on and on.
Kay and BJ took us in as family and we also chose them to be our family. We have two daughters that call Kay (Gramps) and BJ (Nana)! Gramps adored our girls and continued to joke and prank them. They loved his whoopie cushion, fake rat, fake spilled beer can, crazy wig halloween costume, and broken fork trick just to name a few. The girls enjoyed playing golf with Gramps and teaching him how to play Corn Hole. We loved our Gramps and will continue to share our memories.
May our memories bring you peace.
