Lawrence Strauss

Larry was born on October 10, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Mildred and Wilbur Strauss. He grew up in Woodhaven, NY, with his siblings Dennis and Gerald Strauss and Katherine Castro. Larry is survived by his wife Susan and his daughter Tracy Dumas (Wilmington, NC) and her husband Paul as well as his daughter Jennifer O’Toole (Levittown, NY) and her husband Kevin. He is also survived by his five grandsons Kevin, Christopher (Leah), Michael, Sean, and Aidan, as well as his beloved dog Gizmo. 

Larry had many different jobs over the years but he is most well known as a bartender, transportation coordinator and golf ball retriever. Larry (a.k.a Larry Balls) owned and operated Northern Golf in New York for more than three decades. He would retrieve golf balls from the ponds on golf courses, sort them, wash them and bag them for resale. This was a difficult job but one that he took great pride in doing. 

In his free time Larry liked to take trips with his wife and friends to Las Vegas, where he enjoyed playing blackjack, craps and the slots. He was also known to occasionally spend a day at the horse races. Surprisingly even though he spent a lot of time working with golf balls Larry was not the best golfer. This did not stop him from enjoying a round of golf whenever possible with his son-in-law Paul. Larry also loved to barbecue for his family. He really enjoyed the water whether he was floating in the pool or going in the ocean the water was one of his favorite places. 

In 2016 Larry & Susan retired and moved from their home in Levittown, NY, to Wilmington, NC. Though he only got to spend about 7 years here he absolutely loved living in NC. 

Visitation for Larry will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023 from 1:00pm - 3:00 pm at Andrews Mortuary – Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road Wilmington, NC 28412, with his Funeral Service to follow immediately afterwards at 3:00 pm.

Donations in Larry’s memory can be made to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
