Leon Edward Sullivan

Leon Edward Sullivan, 95, of Wilmington, NC, died Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center. He was born on February 22, 1920 in Winnabow, NC. Leon lived in Wilmington for all of his ninety-five years. He retired from the New Hanover County School Systems in 1977 and had also worked in the Wilmington Ship Yards building Liberty Ships. He was a longtime volunteer at the Senior Center and enjoyed working in his yard and fishing. Leon was a faithful member of Pine Valley UMC where he served in a variety of ministry positions, including being a Sunday school teacher and a faithful member of the Sunday morning prayer team. Remembered is his wife, Naomi Sullivan, parents, John Bishop Sullivan and Gertie Cumbee Sullivan, six sisters, two brothers, nieces, Virginia Ann Finch and Doris Watson, nephews, John L. Arnold and Kilby Arnold, all of who preceded him in death. Surviving are his nieces and nephews, Evelyn Martin of Richmond, VA, Larry and Elaine Batson of Wilmington, Julia Ballard of Wilmington, Kay Phelps of Wilmington, Wesley Guthrie of Sneads Ferry, NC, Carolyn Guthrie of Emerald Isle and various other nieces and nephews. Leon also leaves behind many others in his church family, Senior Center friends and several close friends. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 pm Friday, June 5, 2015 at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel and other times Friday at Mr. Sullivan's residence. A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel with Rev. Trish Archer and Rev. Dr. Tim Reaves officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be David Martin, Buck Martin, Wayne Finch, Al Hobbs, Tim Hobbs and Jim Gray. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Parker, Ted Ryan, Ted Croom, Dr. Roger Schurrer, Ted Fritz, George Huffmon and Charles Carraway. The family would like to thank NHRMC's nurses, staff, rehabilitation and Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the excellent care he received.
