Louis Gray Leiner, Jr., affectionately known as “Mr. Lou,” passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2025, at the age of 92. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on April 18, 1933, Mr. Lou lived a long and meaningful life marked by kindness, wisdom, and quiet strength.
He grew up in Carolina Beach, where his love for the ocean began early. In his younger years, he served as a lifeguard, and that connection to the water stayed with him throughout his life. He found joy in fishing, swimming, boating, and camping — especially during the annual “island trip” with close friends or on outings with his Boy Scouts in Troop #19.
Mr. Lou devoted more than 60 years to Scouting, serving as both a Boy Scout and an adult leader with Troop #19. His commitment to mentoring young people and fostering character, leadership, and outdoor skills left a lasting impact on generations of Scouts and their families.
He also had a lifelong love of music. He sang bass in the First Baptist Church choir for an extraordinary 45 years, a role that brought him deep joy and spiritual fulfillment. He was a proud member of the Cape Fear Chordsmen, a local barbershop chorus, and performed with his quartet “Beach Music,” sharing harmony and camaraderie with audiences across the region.
A devoted member of First Baptist Church in Wilmington, Mr. Lou’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. In addition to his musical contributions, he taught 6th grade Sunday School for many years and served faithfully as a Deacon. He was known for his simple acts of kindness — especially his tradition of passing out peppermint candy to folks at church and in the community, a gesture that brought smiles and comfort to many.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Teale Crumpler Leiner, formerly of Clinton, NC; his son Louis Gray Leiner III (Sharon) of Wilmington; his daughter Kim Leiner Sees (Dan) of Bolivia, NC; his sister Marion “Ditty” Leiner of Washington, NC; his daughter-in-law Judy Leiner of Hampstead, NC; his stepson Samuel Lucas “Luke” Jordan of Clinton, NC; and his cherished grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Gray Leiner, Sr. and Maggie May Harrelson Leiner; his son Jonathan D. Leiner of Hampstead, NC; his sister Nancy Leiner McDonald of Durham, NC; and his first wife, Willie S. Leiner of Wilmington.
Mr. Lou will be remembered for his warm smile, generous spirit, and the deep love he held for his family and community. Whether sharing stories from his youth, offering sage advice, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon, he brought comfort and joy to those around him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 pm Friday, October 24, 2025, at First Baptist Church in Wilmington. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Memorial gifts may be made to the First Baptist Church Music Ministry at 411 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28401, to the local food bank, or to the local ministry of one’s choice.
