Lucy Dorenda Long, or Dorenda as she was called by those who knew her, went to her heavenly home on May 20th, 2022. After seeing her Lord and Savior, she was reunited with her husband Samuel Long, parents Fernie and Lucy Todd, two brothers (Horry and Johnny Todd), three sisters (Ester Mishoe, Eula Gressel, Gladys Canady), and one grandson (Justin Hunter Stroupe).
She is survived by a son, Larry Long and his wife Beth, a daughter, Teresa Stroupe and her husband Ricky, three Grandchildren (Sidney Long and his wife Michelle, Sam Long, and Samantha Stroupe and her husband James West), two great grandchildren (Aaron and Kady Long), and many nieces and nephews that she loved deeply.
Dorenda was a faithful woman who loved the Lord and was happiest when studying the Bible or singing hymns. She lived her life in service, whether through teaching Sunday School as she did for over 60 years, singing in the choir, or working with the women’s and prison ministries. She was a devoted member of Long Leaf Baptist Church for over 60 years and was there every time the doors were open until her decline in health prevented her from attending.
Dorenda worked for Queensboro Steel for over 30 years until her retirement, upon which she worked as an Administrative Assistant for her church.
She had a long and blessed life until finally succumbing to Alzheimer’s at the age of 88. While she will be greatly missed, we celebrate that after a lifetime of service, she is finally home.
A visitation and memorial service will be held for Dorenda at Coble Funeral Services at Greenlawn Memorial Park (1155 Shipyard Boulevard). The visitation with family will be held at 1:00pm on May 25, 2022 with the memorial service to follow at 2:00pm. Graveside service will be at Oleander Memorial Gardens following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.
