Margaret Cameron Edge, of Wilmington, passed away May 30, 2012, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice, surrounded by her friends and family. Margaret was born in Wilmington on August 24, 1958, to Robert F. Cameron, Sr. and Elizabeth B. Cameron. Margaret is survived by her husband, William Bartley Edge, and son, William Cameron Edge, who was never far from her thoughts. Margaret is also survived by her mother; her sisters, Lisa Cameron and Karen C. Boney; her brother, Robert F. Cameron, Jr.; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom feel greatly blessed to have known her. She will also be missed by her beloved horses, Charlie, Scout, Naomi, Spider and Cool; her dogs, Beau, Gromit and Hurry; and her cats, Jingle, Mouser, Hootie and Nite-Nite. After graduating from John T. Hoggard High School in 1976, Margaret attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and received a degree in Psychology. Before devoting her time to caring for her horses and family, Margaret worked for Piedmont Airlines and later US Airways. Anyone who knew Margaret understood her love of and passion for her horses. Rain or shine, she would be at the barn caring for or riding them. She was a talented rider who from an early age competed with distinction in the hunter shows throughout the country. She and her horses won ribbons and championships too numerous to list at horse shows including the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show, Upperville, Atlanta Classics, Duke Children's Benefit, Raleigh Indoors, Sedgefield, Camden, and Palm Beach, as well as NCHJA Championships in 1996, 1997 and 1998. She had a keen eye for spotting potential champions in young horses. She also enjoyed needlepointing and produced truly beautiful pieces that are treasured by friends and family. Those who knew Margaret best will remember and admire her gentle kindness, beauty, intelligence, boundless courage, strength, wisdom and indomitable spirit. She cannot ever be replaced and will be greatly missed by all her friends and family. Margaret had many friends throughout her life and enjoyed their company. Her family would like to thank the many caregivers and friends who helped comfort her near the end of her life. In particular, the family wants to recognize her friends, Lynn Shields, Mary Clara Bear-Rusher and Robyn Drinnen, as well as Margaret's cousins, Jane Sullivan and Hilda Dill, who were by her side during much of her final illness. Margaret's family also wants to specifically thank the nurses and doctors at Lower Cape Fear Hospice who made Margaret's last few days as comfortable as possible. Throughout her courageous battle, Margaret was supported by the compassionate care and infinite wisdom of Dr. Eric Winer of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, at 1952 Hillsboro Rd. in Wilmington. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Oakdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & Life Care Center, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401; First Baptist Church, 411 Market St, Wilmington, NC 28401 or to a charity of your choice.
