Born on February 4, 1941, in Managua, Nicaragua, Maria was the beloved daughter of the late Adela Ocon Miranda and Ignacio Lopez Rivera. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Gustavo Alberto Barretto.
She graduated high school in 1959 as a stenographer. Maria began her career as an administrative clerk, where she showcased her strong work ethic, sharp mind, and dedication to service. As the eldest of her siblings, she took on the role of caregiver early in life, helping raise her brothers and sisters and later caring for her mother until her passing at age 63.
Maria’s life was rooted in faith, family, and sacrifice. One of her most cherished family memories was the joy of seeing her sister Adela get married—an event that brought her immense happiness.
In 1977, Maria made the courageous decision to move from Nicaragua to the United States with her only son, Henry Murillo, in search of a better life and greater opportunities. Henry was the love of her life and the greatest blessing God gave her. Her devotion to him was immeasurable—she poured every ounce of love and strength into raising him and often thanked the Lord for the privilege of being his mother. She was deeply proud of his achievements, especially watching him graduate with Honors from Elizabeth High School and Rutgers State University of New Jersey.
Maria will be remembered as a wonderfully strong, faithful woman who was deeply loved and admired by many. She had a heart for others, always ready to offer wise counsel, encouragement, and kindness. Her faith guided her every step, and her presence was a source of comfort and inspiration to those around her.
A visitation will be held at Global River Church, where Maria was a faithful member, on Thursday, June 19, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. A funeral service in celebration of her life will begin at 1:00 PM.

A photo slideshow will begin at 12:00 PM, followed by the service at 1:00 PM.
Maria’s legacy of love, faith, and strength will live on through all who knew and loved her.
