

Martha Grant Smith, born October 24, 1930 in Asheville, NC passed away at her Wilmington, NC home on October 3, 2022. She was born and raised in Asheville, the daughter of Athol and Carla Grant. Her sister and two brothers survive her, Athol Lee Grant, Jr, James E. Grant, and Mary Carolyn Kominowski (Grant), along with their spouses and children. Her loving husband of 53 years, Rev. Clyde B Smith, passed away in 2006.
Martha attended and graduated from Mars Hill College before her marriage. She and Clyde traveled to Fort Worth, TX soon afterward, where Clyde attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. They served in churches in Ohio, Kentucky, Asheville, and Brevard, along with interim pastoral service for numerous churches, including Wilmington, following his Clinical Pastoral training in Winston-Salem and Washington, DC.
Martha and Clyde had five children, Cheryl, Rebecca, Stephen, Timothy, and Lisa, who survive her. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Martha was predeceased by 1 granddaughter.
After 19 years of life and service as Chaplain for the State Hospital in Norman, Oklahoma, Martha and Clyde retired in Wilmington, NC in 1987. Martha was a very active member of First Baptist Church in Wilmington where she served for many years as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. She also served regularly at the Good Shepherd Center for as long as she was able. Martha will be greatly missed by all who knew her as a particularly beautiful, loving, and generous Christian woman.
