Mary Ann Johnston

Mary Ann Johnston, 73, passed on February 21, 2022 surrounded by family and loved ones.  Mary Ann is originally from Elmira, New York.  She also lived in Brownsburg, Indiana before moving to Wilmington, NC in 2020.  She had a few jobs but none more important to her than being a homemaker, Mother and Grandmother.  She always enjoyed a good story, cigarettes, and Pepsi.  Mary Ann was everyone’s friend and confidant.  She listened with kindness and without judgement.  A school report created by her Granddaughter Amelia captures Mary Ann’s early years: Mary Ann loved to read.  Her hobbies were girl scouts, bowling, acting, playing outside, and watching TV on Saturdays.

Mary Ann was predeceased in death by her parents, Bill and Alice Gilbert, her Husband, Harold (Jay) Johnston and her son, Joel Johnston.  She is survived by her son, Jimmy Johnston, daughter-in-law Loran Booker, daughter Jill Ward, sisters Terri Auckland & Susan Krotz and brothers Billy Gilbert & Michael Gilbert.  She was the proud grandparent of seven: Dylan, Abby, Gavin, Amelia, Haley, Sami, and Ethan.   Mary Ann wished for her ashes and the ashes of her husband Jay to be spread in the ocean near Topsail Island, NC, the sight of many joyous family vacations.  A celebration of life is scheduled to take place in Wilmington Saturday July 16th from 1pm to 4pm at 2140 Monroe St, Wilmington, NC.   In lieu of flowers Mary Ann encourages everyone to become an organ donor and to “just be nice” to everyone around you.
