Mary Jane Harrington McCanless

Mary Jane Harrington McCanless, 94, of Wilmington passed away peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and many loved ones on January 30, 2022 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Mary Jane was born on July 26, 1927 in Polkton, NC to her parents, Robert Jordan Harrington and Lonie Esther Cavin Harrington.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Samuel Conger McCanless and her brother, R.J. Harrington, Jr.

She graduated from Polkton High School in 1945 as Salutatorian of her class and pursued a major in business at Wingate College. In 1946 she moved to Charlotte, NC and accepted a position with Haskins and Sells, CPA for one year, and later with The Strietmann Biscuit Company until her marriage in 1951. Mary Jane was a loving mother and a homemaker. She married Samuel Conger McCanless in 1951 and the couple had one child together. Mary Jane was a Christian woman and a member of Believers Destiny Church who loved and served the Lord all her life, instilling those values in her family. She graduated from The Rhema Correspondence Bible School at the age of 86. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, sewing and knitting. Her family and friends will always remember her as a kind and compassionate person.

She is survived by her son, Robert “Robby” Samuel McCanless of the home; her brother, Mason Boyce and wife, Frances Harrington, of Matthews, NC; and her sister, Katherine Harrington Mills, of Polkton, NC; her sister-in-law, Linda Harrington of Polkton, NC and nieces and a nephew.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Coble Funeral Service Chapel, 1155 Shipyard Blvd with Pastor Gary Blazer officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
