Mattie Rea Heath Settlemeyer

She was born in Columbus County, NC on October 2, 1924, daughter of the late Cary Livingston Heath and Lenna Lashley Heath.  Her husband of 65 years, William Albert “Punk” Settlemeyer, Sr. preceded her in death.

Mattie met her husband Punk while working in the mailroom at the Wilmington Shipyard. She retired from the Bladen County Sheriff’s Department in 1988 after 14 years of service.  They lived at Wrightsville Beach and the Carvers Creek Community.

Mattie was a devoted member of the Carvers Creek United Methodist Church and belonged to the UMW, having served on many committees and received the Citizen of the Year Award in 1994.

She was a wonderful mother, homemaker, seamstress and gardener. Mother loved traveling and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grands. Mother loved her church, family, and friends.

Surviving are four children, William Albert Settlemeyer, Jr. (Elizabeth) of Riegelwood, Peggy McKay (Trace) of Wilmington, Judi Davis (Michael) of Wilmington, and David Settlemeyer  (Melanie) of Elizabethtown; grandchildren, Bradley Settlemeyer (Megan), Timothy Settlemeyer (Ashley), Matthew Settlemeyer (Samantha), Karen Priest (Kyle Culpepper), Joseph Priest, Jr.,  (Denise), Hunter Davis (Randall), Michael Davis, Jr., (Sabrina), Michelle Caviness (Watson), Charles Davis, Heath Settlemeyer (Lynn), Susan Edwards (Anthony), and Chris Settlemeyer; great-grandchildren, Jade, Jordyn, Julie, Samantha, Jackson, Ella Caraway, Jay, Lenna, Izzie, Watson, Jr., Caroline, Michael III, Whitley, Hana, Isabella, Brewer, Callahan, Nathan, Mason, and Andrew; brothers, J.R. Heath, Forrest Heath, and Clayton Heath; sisters, Pat Hargrove and Myrtle Bigford (Ted); many special nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Alice Long of Wilmington;  and her special care “Angels”, Patti Malpass, Elizabeth Jennings, and Diane Peterson.  Siblings preceding her in death were Vera Russ, her identical twin, Mabel Peterson, Elvin Ray Heath, Cary Heath, and Alma Heath.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday, September 22, 2017, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel, in Wilmington.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Carvers Creek United Methodist Church, Carvers Creek, NC, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Jimmie Tatum will officiate and pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Mrs. Settlemeyer may be viewed at the church from 10 am Saturday until the service begins.
