

Mercedes, better known as Merce to friends and family, was born on October 18, 1935, in Caguas, Puerto Rico. She came to the New York at age 12 to live with family in Spanish Harlem. Merce passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026.
Merce embraced life with joy, warmth and an open heart. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining, always ready for the next gathering or party. She had a deep faith, and love for her family. She cherished her friendships, always bringing laughter and kindness. Her vibrant spirit made her a beloved presence in every room she entered. For the last 2 years, she enjoyed living independently at Cambridge Village, making lasting memories with her friends, the “Golden Girls”.
Merce married her late husband of 64 years, Tony, in November of 1960. In 1964, they welcomed their daughter Lisa and later moved from Brooklyn, NY to Kings Park, NY. In 2021, Tony and Mercedes left New York for Wilmington, NC to join their daughter, and granddaughter.
Merce was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa, and her granddaughter, Samantha.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026, at St. Mark Catholic Church, 1013 Eastwood Road, Wilmington, NC, United States, time TBD. The obituary will be updated with mass time.
