Mildred D. Copeland, affectionately known as “Millie,” died on May 31, 2019, at the Davis Community, Wilmington, NC. Mildred was born on July 29, 1923 in Newnan, GA, one of eight children of the late James Leon Davis and Drucilla Warren Davis. Over her lifetime, she lived in Bowdon, GA, Birmingham, AL, and in central Florida. In 2005, following the death of her husband of almost 60 years, William Grady Copeland, Millie moved to Wilmington, NC, to be nearer to her daughters’ families.
Mildred was preceded in death by her brother Harold (and his wife, Ola); her sisters Girlilee Davis Thomason (and her husband, Paul), Jimmie Davis McGhee (and her husband, Bill), Willene Davis Styles (and her husband, Marion), and Wawena Davis Phillips (and her husband, Kenneth); by her brother-in-law C.B. Crow and by her sister-in-law Jean Grafton Davis. Brother James Leon Davis and sister Frances Davis Crow survive her.
Everyone loved this quiet, little woman referred to as “Sunshine” by her family: She was ever patient, cheerful, kind, fun-loving, fair-minded, and courageous when facing life’s challenges. Cherishing her memory are her two daughters, Donna Copeland Doughty (Gary) and Susan Copeland Ermer (Bill); three grandsons (Matthew Doughty, Michael Doughty, and Brett Ermer); and many wonderful nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
A gathering to celebrate and remember the life of this gentle lady will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan, GA followed by a graveside service at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Champions and the Davis Community for their care of “Miss Millie”. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
