Mildred Gibson Nisbet

Mildred Gibson Nisbet, age 96, of Wilmington, died peacefully on Saturday morning, January 15th at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove after more than 4 years in the Nursing and Rehabilitation Home. Mildred Nisbet was born in Wilmington on April 8, 1914. She was preceded in death by her parents, Isabella and Albert F. Gibson. She was also predeceased by her two brothers, Albert F. Gibson, Jr., of Wilmington and Harold A. Gibson of Jacksonville, Fl. She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, William Bill Leonidas, son William L. Nisbet Jr of Myrtle Beach, SC, grandson William L. Nisbet III of Myrtle Beach SC; and son, Albert G. Nisbet, wife Debra Tyndall Nisbet, and granddaughter Tracy Renee½ Nisbet of Sneeds Ferry, NC. Mildred graduated from New Hanover High School in the class of 1931, the 1st four year class to graduate from the new high school on Market Street. She attended and graduated from East Carolina Teachers College ECTC, now East Carolina University, with a degree in math and science. After teaching for 2 years in Grifton, NC; she married Bill and devoted her time to being a wife and mother. At the age of 52, she became a teacher again, taking over the third grade at Lincoln Elementary School in Leland, NC. She was recognized for ten years of dedicated service to the schools of Brunswick County and was awarded a plaque at her retirement in 1977. Mildred lived a life that was well spent as a daughter, wife, mother, and teacher. She enjoyed a long and loving marriage of 71 years to her college sweetheart and she will be missed by her family and friends. Graveside services will be held at Oakdale Cemetery in the Live Oak Section at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, January 18th with the Reverend Thomas C. Barnett of St. John½s Episcopal Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John½s Episcopal Church or to a charity of your choice. The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to the staff at Autumn Care for the loving support given to Mildred during her stay with them.
