Nancy Carolyn Horner Hulin, age 87, of Carolina Beach, NC, previously of Sanford, NC, passed away on April 3, 2014 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Life Center from complications following a stroke.

She was born on July 7, 1926 in Durham, NC and was preceded in death by her parents William Edwin Horner, Sr. and Nannie Andrews Horner. She is survived by a sister, Louise Horner Bowles of Greensboro, NC and preceded in death by a brother, William Edwin Horner, Jr. of Sanford, NC.

Nancy attended Converse College of Spartanburg, SC and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. There she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority and on the staff of the Daily Tarheel Newspaper. She took her first job at the Lexington Dispatch Daily Newspaper in Lexington, NC where she met and married Dr. James Franklin Hulin. After a time in the Navy in California, they settled in Sanford, NC where Dr. Hulin practiced dentistry.

In 1972 Nancy relocated to Wilmington, NC where she worked at New Hanover Memorial Hospital in the Quality Review department for almost 20 years. She then retired to Carolina Beach, NC and became a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Her greatest passion then became walking and talking daily with her dear neighbors.

She left to cherish her memory her daughter, Cheryle Hulin Brown, husband Joe and two granddaughters, Morgann Elizabeth Brown Loposay and Bonnie Caroline Brown of Knightdale, NC; her son, James Franklin Hulin, Jr. and wife Ellen and two granddaughters, Madeline Estelle Hulin of Shanghai, China and Elizabeth Ann Hulin of the home in Jamestown, NC; nieces, Laura Warren Bowles of McLean, VA, Belinda Horner Cooper of Hampstead, NC, and nephew William Edwin Horner, III of Sanford, NC.

Nancy was a member of the greatest and strongest generation and leaves behind many friends whom she loved dearly and always ended every conversation with those three words we are now so thankful to have heard so often, “I love you!”

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, April 7, 2014 at 1pm at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Carolina Beach, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401 or UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communications, P.O. From all of Harold and Evelyn Johnson's children, we send our sincere sympathy to all of Nancy's family. She was certainly a part of our lives as we were growing up. Always so much fun. She and Mom had a special friendship and I know they are catching up now.

My husband, Billy and I met Nancy in Nov. of 2011 shortly after buying a home in Carolina Sands. She quickly became our closet friend...then a short time later she was like family. Nancy was a loving, sincere, gracious, classy, and hilarious woman....we shared some good times for which we will be forever grateful. We just deeply wish we had known her longer but are so thankful for the time we had with her...she truly touched our lives and we will never forget her.

Hi Bill III and all of the family, Nancy was a wonderful member of the NHRMC family and a beloved member of a wonderful family in Sanford where I grew up. She brought her love of people to everyone she met and served every community in which she lived with grace and dignity. We will all miss her.

Nancy, was an icon in our Carolina Sands neighborhood. She walked and talked our neighborhood. She told me walking was her energy pill, her gasoline. When she walked she filled up her tank. You never ever talked with Nancy without her making you laugh. Nancy was very special. Ron and I are missing her already. I thought for sure she would live to be 100 and we could have big party for her. She was one of the first people we met when we moved to Carolina Sands in 1999. Glad I got to meet her family. We are keeping each and every one of them in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless.
