Nona Jane Smeilus

A Wilmington native, she was born March 18, 1948, to Lignell and Julia (Davis) Hood. She married her high school sweetheart, Armin Luther Smeilus and they had two children together, Armin (Luther) Smeilus II and Michael William Smeilus.

Jane always had a great love of family and of children and worked in childcare for many years before retiring. She lived life to the fullest each and every day through simple pleasures: visiting and chatting with friends and family, feeding the birds in her yard, gardening, spending time at the beach, searching for “treasures” at local consignment shops, but above all else – spending time with her grandchildren, Dylan and Noah Smeilus. Jane touched many lives and was loved by all who met her. Jane joins her mother, Julia Hood; her father, Lignell Hood; her husband, Armin Smeilus; and her sweet grandson, Tristan, in heaven.

She is survived by her brother, Lignell (Billy) Hood; her sister, Susan Owen; her two sons and their families (Luther Smeilus and wife Sarah Smeilus, and their two sons Dylan and Noah; and Michael Smeilus and wife Michelle Gautier Smeilus); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family, friends, and others whose lives Jane touched are invited to Coble Funeral and Cremation Service at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 1155 Shipyard Blvd, Wilmington, NC, from 10 am – 11 am on Friday, February 17th, 2023, to reminisce, grieve, and of course, just chat.
