She was born June 18, 1923 in New Orleans, LA. At the age of 13, she moved to Long Island, NY where she lived for sixty-nine years. With her husband, David H. Stamer, she raised three daughters, Leslie, Norma-Jeanne and Ellen.They lived in West Islip, Long Island where she was involved in community activities (she established the first Girl Scout Brownie Troop in W.I. and stayed with them until they achieved Senior Sea Scouts,) school activities and local politics. She was employed by the West Islip School System for twenty-five years as secretary to the high school principal and finally as the administrative secretary to the school business manager. After retiring, she moved with her husband, David, to New Bern, NC. Her husband passed away suddenly eight months later and her father (Rocco Salvatore) passed away August 25, 1974. David was encrypted in the Columbarium in Arlington National Cemetery. Five years later, she married Paul A. Newlove who also preceded her in death. In addition, her grandson John Okula, sister, Leslie Kelly and brother Rocco Salvatore, preceded her in death. Norma was a charter member of the Craven Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. She worked and retired as a costumed, interpretive Guide at the Tryon Palace Complex. She also volunteered for various activities in Christ Church. She started a chapter of the Red Hat Society and became its queen.
Norma is survived by her daughters: Leslie Laning and husband Raymond of Wilmington, NC, Norma-Jeanne Okula and husband Paul of NY and Ellen Hall and Michael of PA; grandchildren: Geoffrey Laning, Kimberly Giaimo and husband Chris, Allison Martuscello and husband Gino, Craig Hall and Kristen Hall; great grandchildren: Katherine Giaimo, Mary Giaimo, Rachael Okula, Chris Okula, Lucy Martuscello, Joseph Martuscello, Olsen Estrella, Ellis Estrella and Indie Ferguson. Members of her extended family are Dr. Philip and Elizabeth Mahaney, James and Lori Mahaney, Georgia Mahaney and Leif Mahaney, Heather and Duke Hutchings, Paul and Maxine Newlove, Robert Newlove and Susan Newlove.
A celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 13th at 3:00 pm at St. John’s Episcopal Church,1219 Forest Hills Drive, Wilmington, NC 28403
