
Norman Edward Tyson, 76, of Wilmington, NC, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, February 28, 2008, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born in Wilmington, NC, September 17, 1931, son of the late Mack Tyson and Goldie Faulk Tyson. Mr. Tyson was a member and past deacon of Winter Park Baptist Church, a former member of the church choir, the Joe Pettus Sunday School Class, and served as a kitchen host at the church. He started playing bass guitar in high school. In the late fifties-early sixties he played with Charlie Daniels, and for another forty years played bass guitar with several bands, culminating in his participation with the Dixieland Society of the Lower Cape Fear. Mr. Tyson was employed with the city of Wilmington as Superintendent of Operations, Streets Division for thirty years, retiring in December 1992. He was a longtime member of the American Public Works Association. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing, and golf and, with his wife, was a member of the Reunion Committee of the New Hanover High School class of 1951. Mr. Tyson served honorably for ten years with the North Carolina National Guard. Norman is remembered as the loving husband of fifty-six years to his wife, Dorothy Bagwell Tyson; and a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his three children, Herman F. Tyson and wife Fran of Buies Creek, Jerry M. Tyson and wife Lisa of Boiling Spring Lakes, and Timothy E. Tyson and wife Theresa of Wilmington; grandchildren, Andrew, Amanda Pollack and husband Mitchell, Amy, Trisha, Spencer, Emily, Katherine, Sara Hobgood and husband Jon, David Tyson and wife Allison, and Amber Hoyle-Harris and husband Todd; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Brianna, Caitlyn, Nevaeh, MaKayla, Abriana, Kylie, Caedmon, and Taylor. His sister-in-law, Linda Bagwell of Wilmington also survives. Two brothers, Herman E. Tyson and Chester Tyson and a sister, Edith Baker preceded him in death. A celebration of Norman's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Winter Park Baptist Church, 4700 Wrightsville, Wilmington, NC, 28403. The Rev. Eric Porterfield, the Rev. Mark Teachey and the Rev. Clif Harris will officiate. A private interment will be held later at Oleander Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday immediately following the memorial service. In memory of Mr. Tyson, memorial gifts may be directed to Winter Park Baptist Church.
