Pat was born to the late Frank Elliott Barber and late Ruth McKnight Barber, April 8, 1943, in Radford, Virginia. Pat grew up in Mooresville, NC and graduated from Mooresville High School, before attending Salem College. In December of 1988 she married the love of her life, Frank Edward “Dee” Dunn. They adored each other and were happily married for over 30 years until Dee’s death on August 19, 2020. She was never happier than when she was with him.
She is survived by her four children: Susan Mebane Franco (Alan) of Atlanta; Patricia (Sissy) Mebane Schoettelkotte (Bill) of Wilmington; Elizabeth (Betsy) Mebane Farmer (Eric) of Charlotte; and William (Billy) Carter Mebane IV (Sarah) and their father William Carter Mebane III of Wilmington; stepdaughters Deede Dunn Grainger (Ike) of Charlotte; and Corinna Dunn Mann (Ted) also of Charlotte. She delighted in her eleven grandchildren who affectionately called her PittyPat. Lizzie, Caroline and Carter Franco; Cricket, Clay and Locke Schoettelkotte; Sarah Carter, Mary Banks and Ben Farmer; Ann Katherine and Will Mebane; and Dee’s four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Pat was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church and member of The Junior League of Wilmington. She was even a Cub Scout Den leader for her favorite child. She enjoyed being a member of the Forest Hills Home and Garden Club and spending time with her friends. Pat was blessed to be extremely creative and loved sharing her talent with others. She had a keen eye and was known for her classic design style. She enjoyed running her own interior design business for many years, where Pat had a knack for creating a beautiful and welcoming home. She enjoyed cooking, and if you had a baby or lost a family member, you may have been the recipient of her delicious fried chicken. Inherited from her mother, Pat, had a quick, dry wit, and was always a fun conversationalist.
We will celebrate Pat’s and Dee’s lives on Friday, August 13, at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church, 125 S. 3rd Street, Wilmington, NC. A reception will be held following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
