Rebecca "Suzy" Sue Allred Penny, affectionately known to everyone as "Suzy" or "Nana," passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, at the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Hospice center, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 73 years old.
Born in Alamance County on December 25, 1952, Suzy brought a special light into the world from the very beginning. She had just recently moved to Willard, where she continued to center her life around nature, creativity, and her deep devotion to her family.
Suzy was a woman of many passions. She found immense peace spending time outdoors, loved to garden, and truly enjoyed painting. An incredibly talented and thoughtful soul, she poured her heart into making beautiful, handmade quilts for the most special people in her life—treasures that her family will cherish forever. Those who knew her well will fondly remember her infectious sense of fun and how she just absolutely loved shopping on Temu.
Family was Suzy’s greatest joy and proudest achievement. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Penny.
Her legacy of love lives on through her children, Jan Wilson and her husband Bryan, and Brad Penny and his wife Carrie. She was the world's proudest Nana to her grandchildren, Whitni Leedy and her husband Jason, and John Drish and his wife Sydney. Her spark will continue to shine in the lives of her adored great-grandchildren, Bryson and Colson Leedy, who brought her endless happiness. Her family also grew to include her grandchildren by marriage, Kara Mitchell and her husband Kain, Caleb Sipe and his wife Leo, and Taylor Sipe, as well as her great-grandson by marriage, Kolten Mitchell. Over the years, Suzy was also blessed with many wonderful neighbors and friends who grew to become just like family to her.
Suzy’s family wishes to extend their deepest, most heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare for the extraordinary, compassionate care they provided to their Mom (Nana) during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in Suzy’s honor to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare https://lifecare.org/donate to support the vital comfort they provide to families in need.
A Celebration of Suzy's Life Will be Held at a Later Date.
