

Born on March 12, 1946, in Harrisville, Ohio, Richard was the son of Orville Richard Childers and Florence Mamie (Peterson) Childers. He graduated from Adena High School in 1964 before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant (E-5). During his eight years of service, he completed two tours in Vietnam, demonstrating courage and dedication to his nation.
Richard was a long time member of American Legion Post 129 at Carolina Beach, NC where he had many friends.
Richard was a hardworking and honest man who built his own business, Quality Appliance Service. He took great pride in his work and was well known for his expertise, integrity, and commitment to his customers.
On March 7, 2002, Richard married the love of his life, Myra Childers. Together they shared 24 wonderful years of marriage filled with companionship, laughter, and love.
A devoted member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church for over 20 years, Richard was deeply involved in his church community. He served two terms on the Board of Trustees, sang bass with the Amazing Grace group, participated in the Men’s Huddle, and completed the Disciple One Bible Study.
Richard had many passions throughout his life. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing tennis and golf. He had a lifelong love of cars and airplanes, and found joy in building model airplanes. He also enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, trivia, and cooking—especially making breakfast for those he loved. Above all, Richard cherished time spent with family and friends. He had a special love for the ocean and treasured the many mornings he spent watching the sunrise along Carolina Beach.
Known for his humor and gift for storytelling, Richard could light up any room with a good joke or a well-told tale. He was kind-hearted and generous, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Myra Childers; his children, Greg Childers and wife Stephanie (Reichert), and Jessica (Childers) Fitzpatrick and husband Michael; his grandchildren, Adam, Ethan, Charles, and Richard; his brother, Jeff Childers and wife Cille; his sister, Janet Dragger and husband Darwin; his bonus son, David Rackley; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Florence Childers.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held on April 10, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 300 Harper Avenue, Carolina Beach, North Carolina. A reception will follow immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Paul’s UMC or to St. Jude Children's Hospital
Richard will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of kindness, humor, and love will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
