Richard Davis Goff

Richard Davis Goff ""Dick"" died Sunday, January 16, 2011 at the Davis Health Care Center in Wilmington, North Carolina. Dick was born June 9, 1934 in Petersburg, Virginia, son of the late Edwin Hiram Goff and Agnes Davis Goff. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1951, attended the University of Richmond, Duke University BA 1955 and Ph.D. 1963 and Cornell University MA 1956. Dick began his teaching career in 1961 as an instructor in history at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1964 he joined the faculty at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he taught in the Department of History and Philosophy until his retirement in 2000. Dick was author of Confederate Supply and a number of entries in The Encyclopedia of Southern History. Together with colleagues at Eastern Michigan University, he was co-author and editor of several textbooks. He was generous in service to his department and to the university. Dick's greatest professional and personal fulfillment came from his love of teaching, and he leaves behind a legion of former students whose lives he touched. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Nancy Rudolph Goff, his brother Donald Goff Norma Wasko of Jericho, Vermont, and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Plans are being made for a celebration of Dick's life to take place later in the year.
