Richard Lawrence Heck

Rich was born on April 9, 1936, in Delran, New Jersey, to Charles M.E. Heck and Margaret Baldwin Heck. He lived a life defined by faith, family, service, craftsmanship, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved.

A lifelong learner, Rich graduated from Campbell College and East Carolina University with a degree in Education and later pursued postgraduate studies at Temple University. He proudly served in the United States Navy Reserve and carried that spirit of service throughout his life.

Rich was preceded in death by his beloved wife of many years, Carol Emerson Heck, who passed away in 2016. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Charles "Marv" Heck and Robert "Bob" Heck.

He is survived by his loving children, Susan (Jeffrey) Bell and Steven (Rebecca) Heck; his cherished grandchildren, Kevin (Victoria) Bell, Kathryn (Carson) Petrea, Tyler Heck, and Grayson Heck; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Penelope Bell, Molly Bell, and Sallie Petrea. Nothing brought Rich greater joy than watching his family grow through the generations.

Rich had a remarkable gift for woodcarving, creating beautiful works of art that reflected both his patience and creativity. He was an active member of the Cape Fear Woodcarvers, where he shared his passion and friendship with fellow artisans. He was also a dedicated member of American Legion Post 10, remaining committed to his fellow veterans and his community.

Those who knew Rich will remember his steadfast faith, his devotion to his family, and his enthusiasm for Philadelphia sports. Whether cheering on his favorite teams, spending hours at his carving bench, or simply enjoying time with those he loved, Rich embraced life's simple pleasures with gratitude and joy.

Rich's legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the love he shared, the artistry he created, and the family who will forever cherish his memory. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service celebrating Rich's life will be held at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Wilmington, North Carolina, at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
