Robert Todd Eksten, age 53, much loved son of Bonita (Bonnie) Eksten and the late Ronald Eksten, suffered a fatal heart attack and died December 20 at his home. He was the brother of Elisabeth Looney and a devoted uncle to Jack Looney and to the late Scott Looney, and was loved by his extended family and friends.
Bob was born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 28, 1969, and spent most of his school days in Weston, CT. A graduate of The Hill School in Pennsylvania, he was a golfer, a runner, a member of The Hill Tones and was the lead in the senior musical. A skilled and talented musician, he played the piano guitar, bass, mandolin, viola and drums. He could play anything by ear and was often a regular at open-mic nights in Charlotte and New York City.
Bob lived and worked as a web programmer in Charlotte until Covid allowed him to work from home. He chose to move back to Wilmington in 2020 to help his sister and mother to heal from the sudden passing of their dear Scott.
Bob was a loving son, brother, uncle, and nephew. He was a life-long learner – never guessing but always researching to know and to understand. He enjoyed taking inexperienced hikers out to the mountains to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of a sunrise or to watch a group of wild horses grazing or to spot an elk and an occasional bear. He loved camping in the mountains and his goal was to finish the Appalachian Trail.
His kindness, love of family and friends and his incredible sense of humor are extraordinary gifts that will be missed.
If you are so moved to make a donation in his memory, please consider The American Heart Association or the National Parks Foundation.
A memorial service will take place Thursday, January 12 in the First Presbyterian Church chapel at 2 p.m. o’clock. The Rev. Dan Lewis and the Rev. Diane Giannola will officiate.
