In Memory of Robert Leder
Robert Berle Leder, 76, was born on leap day in 1944 in Whiteville, NC – he never dreamed of living anywhere other than this town. While his death on January 16th saddens us, the knowledge that throughout his life he touched so many with his spirit of giving and larger than life personality brings us joy.
After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, he returned to Whiteville and began his career working and eventually running his family’s business (Leder Brothers) which was started by his father and uncle, J. Herman and Morris Leder, in 1925. He loved interacting with his customers and employees. Stories are continually related to us about shopping at Leder Brothers and dealings with him. He not only gave generously to causes he believed in but he also served his community through volunteerism and elected civic positions. He was serving as a member of the Whiteville City Council since the mid-1990s. He was so excited about the long-term plans and potential growth for the city. In addition to his family he loved the beach, checking his mail at the Post Office, and anything UNC – even through an 8 win basketball and several 1 win football seasons. He is preceded in death by his parents J. Herman and Yetta Leder, his wife, Linda Leder, son, Samuel Leder; and step-daughter, Cindy Crane. He is survived by his brother Paul Leder; sisters Marjorie Goldstein, Shirley Osterneck, and Brenda Leder; daughter Rachel Couchenour and husband Brad (Charlotte, NC), son Benjamin Leder (Sanford, Fl) and daughter in law Shannon Leder (Concord, NC); stepdaughters Carla Ketola and husband Danny (Iron Station, NC), Pam Lanier and husband Mike (Bunnlevel, NC),; grandchildren Matthew and Bennett Leder and George Couchenour; and step-grandchildren Stephanie Bowles, Ashley Murphy, Hope and Austin Ketola, Noel and Michael Lanier.
A private graveside service for family was held on January 18th. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in Robert’s memory to Columbus County Arts Council (PO Box 291, Whiteville, NC 28472) or Bnai Israel Congregation of Wilmington.

It is with a sad heart that I heard about Robert’s passing. He was a good friend to my sister, Verna Williamson, throughout their careers and also afterward ... and a friend to me. His parents would be proud of the man that he became .... an honorable and good man. Condolences to his family. Rest In Peace, Robert.
