

Russell Frazier Hughes, 81, of Houston, Texas, passed away on March 23, 2024. Born in Pulaski, VA on November 21, 1942, Russell was the son of Alice and Goodson Hughes. He was preceded in death by his father, Goodson Frazier Hughes, mother Alice Chapman Hughes, brothers James and Samuel Hughes, sister Pauline Hughes, and nephew Jimmy Hughes.
Russell was renowned for his captivating storytelling. Those who knew him were familiar with his tales, such as his memories of being sent out to pay his family's bills and having just enough left over for a movie and two candy bars. He often reminisced about simpler times and cherished moments from his youth.
Leaving home at 18, Russell ventured to East Carolina University for a year before returning to Lynchburg, VA. He juggled multiple jobs while earning his BA in Business Administration from Lynchburg College, completed business classes at Rutgers University, and fulfilled a four-year commitment to the ARMY reserves. With a strong work ethic, Russell excelled in the banking industry, quickly climbing the ranks. Later relocating to Houston, Texas, he dedicated himself to various business ventures, specializing in SBA loans and serving as a loan officer for Houston Federal Credit Union.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Russell was an avid runner who emphasized the importance of health and fitness to his children. He completed numerous races, including the challenging Lynchburg 10 Miler and the Houston Marathon. He maintained a disciplined exercise regimen, and was often found on his treadmill or bike, or at the local YMCA. Russell was a dedicated sports enthusiast and enjoyed taking his children to see the Houston Astros and the Houston Rockets play.
Most evenings, Russell could be found during "chip time," surrounded by an assortment of snacks before dinner, engaging in conversations and sharing stories with loved ones. His "chip time" gatherings became cherished moments for connection and camaraderie.
Russell Hughes is survived by his children: Russell Frazier Hughes, Jr. of Roanoke, VA; Cameron Lewis Hughes of Jupiter, FL; Courtney Holcombe Hughes and Buffy Taylor of Wilmington, NC. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Josie, Gibson, Graham, Hayden, Will, and Nell. Additionally, he is survived by his niece-in-law, Debbie Hughes, niece-in-law, Samarah Hughes, and Linda Johnson.
A funeral service will be held at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church on Monday, April 22, 2024 at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas at 2pm with a reception afterward.
