Sylvia “Ray” Suggs Freeman, 86, of Wilmington passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 15, 2013, at her residence. Ray was born March 8, 1927 in Durham, NC, daughter of the late Thomas Lacy and Maggie Beatrice Suggs. Her sister, Claudine King, sister, Isobel Hall, and brother, Thomas Suggs preceded her in death. Ms. Freeman graduated from Durham High School, attended Duke University, and retired to Wilmington in 1992 following a 35 year career with General Telephone/Verizon in Durham, NC. She loved her family, friends, shopping for bargains, cooking for a crowd, reading, writing, sewing, decorating cakes, music, spoiling her dogs and playing bridge.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Cherry; three grandchildren, Xan, Carla, and Quin Cherry; and one great granddaughter, Rain Spencer. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, 11:00 AM at Wrightsville United Methodist Church with Pastor Bob Bauman officiating. The family will receive friends directly following the service at Inland Greens Club, Inland Greens Drive.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
