A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at 10 a.m. EST at Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church, 800 Piner Road, Wilmington NC 28409. The service will be live streamed on YouTube for those who cannot attend. The live stream link is https://youtu.be/g60HHVpaLUs.
Ted was born on July 17, 1956, in Columbus Ohio.
He spent his early youth in New Carrollton MD, and later grew up in Columbia, MD, where he attended Howard High School. Ted was one of the people primarily responsible for starting a soccer team at Howard High. His love for soccer and tremendous athletic ability lead to him playing in college at Montgomery College in Maryland and later at UNCW in North Carolina, where he was the team captain. Ted graduated from UNCW with a Bachelor's degree in Business Management.
Ted settled in Wilmington, NC where met his future wife, June, at a church event. Ted and June were married for 38 years and together they raised two beautiful children, Christina and Theo. He loved Jesus and was always committed to his faith. Ted was a wonderful man who believed that God and family were first and foremost. Ted especially enjoyed playing with and coaching his beloved grandson, Benjamin, who Ted swore was almost ready for his soccer debut. Ted could also be seen regularly taking his son's dog, Pepper, on rides in his truck. When relaxing, you could often find Ted enjoying his favorite foods: carrots and mint chocolate chip ice cream.
Ted’s 43 year career in the Electrical Supply business working as a Sales Representative began and ended in Wilmington. He worked for several businesses, including Graybar, Hagemeyer and Mayer Electrical Supply Company, where he worked until his retirement.
Ted was an avid sports’ enthusiast and enjoyed playing soccer, swimming, golfing and running. He used his love for sport to share his love for Jesus by actively leading or participating in numerous church and parachurch sports’ ministries for over 25 years. To help us celebrate Ted’s life and ministry in sport, those in attendance are encouraged to wear their favorite team jersey or team colors. Ted was also a huge practical joker and never passed up the chance to engage in the sport of “ribbing.”
Ted is survived by his wife, June Kort; his daughter, Christina Gilstrap; his son-in- law, Zach Gilstrap; his son, Theo Kort; his grandson, Benjamin Gilstrap; his mother, Sally Bowen; his three brothers (Tom Kort, Larry Kort, and Jack Kort); his sister-in-law, Mary Kort; his sister-in-law, Jennifer Rexroad; his niece, Laura Kort; and his nephew, Sean Kort.
Ted is preceded in death by his father, Ted Kort Sr., and his stepfather, Barry Bowen.
