

Virginia Shaffer passed away on February 11, 2014 at the age of 94. Virginia, or Gin as she was often called, was born in Hinsdale, NY to Earl and Hazel Peasley. She graduated from Hinsdale High School and attended Olean Business College. She moved to Washington, DC, where she married her high school sweetheart, George C. Shaffer in 1940. Virginia was a legal secretary for Southern Railway for over 20 years, while helping her husband run a home building business in the DC area. In 1972, Gin and George moved back to Westons Mills, NY where they purchased and ran a blueberry farm for 15 years. During that time she was also employed as legal secretary for Judge Crowley and Shane and Franz, Esq. until retiring in 1984. They moved to Etowah, NC in 1987, living there 5 years, then moved to Hampstead, NC. They moved to McDonough, GA in 1998 to be closer to their granddaughter, Denice and her family. After George's death in 1998, Virginia stayed in GA until moving into the Brightmore Independent Living Facility in Wilmington, NC in 2004. Two years ago, she moved into the home of her son, Bill and daughter-in-law, Cheryle who cared for her until her death. Virginia will always be remembered for her love of family, her incredible memory and infectious sense of humor. She will be missed. Virginia is survived by her two sons, Donald (Courtney) of Chautauqua, NY and William (Cheryle) in Hampstead, NC; four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Her brother, Walter Peasley lives in Olean, NY. A funeral service will be held at 11am, Monday, February 17, 2014, at Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel with Rev. Randy Maynard officiating. Interment at Sea Lawn Memorial Park immediately thereafter. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.
