
Wallace White Chappell, 90, of Wilmington, formerly of Raleigh, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2011. He was born on September 8, 1920 in Elizabeth City, son of the late Louis R. and Margaret W. Chappell.
His attendance at UNC-Chapel Hill was interrupted by World War II and he served as a B-17 pilot in the Eighth Air Force, completing 26 missions over Europe in 1943-44. After his overseas service, he married Anne Louise Nixon of Elizabeth City and completed his degree at UNC. After several years at Dan River Mills in Danville, VA, he worked as an industrial engineer for Westinghouse in Raleigh until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Anne Nixon Chappell. He is survived by his son Nick and wife Sharon of Monticello, AR; daughter Nancy Price and husband Ellis of Castle Hayne; and grandchildren Tom Chappell and fianceé Liz Pempe of Durham and Grace Chappell of Chicago, IL.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, March 24, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service in Wilmington.
A graveside service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, March 26, at Old Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City.
The family requests no flowers, and suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum, PO Box 1992, Savannah, GA 31402.
