

Walter Franklin Holloway, Jr., 89, of Wilmington, NC, passed away at Spring Arbor of Wilmington on Thursday, May 22, 2014. He was born in Durham, NC, on August 9, 1924, the son of the late Walter Franklin Holloway, Sr. and Tessie Beck Holloway. He graduated from Durham High School in 1942. Walter served in the US Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1945 as a Sergeant with the Ninth Air Force in Europe. After the war he served in the Navy Reserve (AM3) from 1947 to 1949. He worked for Sun Oil Company and Conoco-Phillips for twenty-eight years. After retirement he formed Highsmith Property Owners Association where he was the President. He was a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary in Flotilla 10-01 of Wrightsville Beach from 1992 to 1999, and was Flotilla Auxiliarist of the Year for 1996. He was a member of American Legion Post 165 of Burgaw. He is survived by two sons, Thomas Walter Holloway of Southport, NC and John Franklin Holloway of Arlington, VA; and four sisters, Mary Helen Tuck, Grace Proctor, Peggy Thompson and Mattie L. Holloway. Also remembered is his wife of 37 years, Crosby Holloway, who passed away on May 16 and a daughter, Mary Kay Jollensten who preceded him in death. There will be a memorial service at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends following the service.
