William was born October 2, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY to William H. and Mabel Thatcher Carshaw.
He has been a Leland, NC resident for the last 16 years. He was a former resident of New Milford, NJ. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Maybelle Carshaw, his first wife Mary Barbara Carshaw and his daughter Marybeth Stinson.
“Bill” is survived by his loving wife Barbara M. Carshaw (née Baker), his daughter Veronica Schreyer and her husband Steve, his son James Robertson and daughter Cathy Robertson. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Kristin, Thomas (TJ), William, Jessica, James, Stephen, Mary Kate, Michelle and James. He has been blessed by great grandchildren who loved their Pop: Paige, Ryder, Gabby, William and Marq.
He was a proud World War lI veteran serving in the US Army. Bill was a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University, He was an accountant in New Jersey for 50 years retiring from Robert Graff Accounting in 1999. Mr. Carshaw was always civic oriented. His early civic duty began as an air raid runner growing up in Oradell, NJ. He was an active participant in Doremus American Legion post 55 and in it’s Jr Drum and Bugle Corps. A highlight was being part of their National Championship squad in 1948. He was a member of New Milford Elks Post 2290, drum instructor for the NM Elks Fife and Drum Corps. Past President of New Bridge School PTO.
He was an active participant in Leland American Legion post 68 and an officer of the Landvale Trace Homeowners Association. He loved to paint, teach art classes, play and teach drums, watch TV, and first and foremost spend time with his family and enjoy a nice lunch at Leland and Wilmington’s wonderful restaurants. He loved his lapdog Chardonnay.
Funeral Mass will be private. Interment will be at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Wilmington, NC.
In lieu of flowers a donation in his memory may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physician’s Dr. Wilmington, NC or American Legion Post 68, P.O. Box 521 Leland NC 28451.
