Hidy was born on January 29, 1957, the eldest son of William Hiden McEachern III “Bill” and Norma Carpenter McEachern. He grew up in Wilmington and attended Forest Hills Elementary, Williston Middle School, New Hanover High School, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
Hidy followed in the footsteps of his family, working alongside his grandfather and father W.H. McEachern’s Sons Produce in downtown Wilmington. After the company closed, he continued working as a boat motor mechanic until Parkinson’s eventually made it impossible for him to work.
Hidy loved his family and friends deeply and gave thanks to the Lord for bringing them into his life. He loved the outdoors and the water, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, deep-sea diving, water skiing, and snow skiing. He also loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Julia Perry McEachern, and his sons, William Hiden McEachern V “Will” and Robert Andrews McEachern “Drew”. He is also survived by his brother, Stuart Davis McEachern “Stu”; his sister, Eda Caroline McEachern “Missy”; and his grandchildren, Carran Hiden McEachern and Mayleigh Grace McEachern.
Hidy will be deeply missed by the family and friends who were blessed to know and love him.
A celebration of his life will be held on October 3, 2026, from 2-4pm, at Savard Beer and Board, located in the W.H. McEachern Produce building, at 121 South Front Street, Wilmington, NC.
All family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate Hidy’s life.
