William Harvey Underwood

On November 25, 2024, William Harvey Underwood, age 76, succumbed to pancreatic cancer. A native of Cary, North Carolina, “Bill” was the son of Von Harvey Underwood of Tar Heel, NC and Doreen Goodall Underwood of Staines, England. After graduating from Cary High School, Bill proudly served 4 years in the US Navy and qualified on the submarine USS Clamagore (SS 343). Following the completion of his service in the Navy, he returned to NC State University where he earned a BS in Botany and MS in Microbiology.

He enjoyed a very successful, 30-year career in the pharmaceutical industry and retired in 2012.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife of 37 years Linda Simmonds Underwood and their sons: Bill (Brittany) and Matt; his daughters: Suzanne (Jim) Price, Julie (Tim) Richardson, and Jennifer, and their mother JoAnn. He also leaves behind four beloved grandchildren: Queenie, Alesan, and Lyra Price, and Milo Richardson. He is also survived by his brother Von (Kirsten), nephew Charles, and niece Amanda.

When he retired, out of a desire to give back and serve his community, Bill joined the Coastal Carolina Submarine Veterans and the Hampstead Kiwanis Club, serving both clubs as Secretary for 12 and 8 years respectively. He is proud to have been involved in many improvements to the beautiful Hampstead Kiwanis Park. He was a motivating force in the Submarine Veterans group. "Pride Runs Deep!"

Bill enjoyed living his life from a positive perspective and consequently enjoyed most of the challenges in his life. He was extremely proud of his family. He was a happy, happy man. Go Pack!

A Visitation will be held at 10am until 11am on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at Coble Funeral & Cremation Service at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 1155 Shipyard Blvd, Wilmington, NC 28412. A Memorial Service will follow at 11am in the Chapel.
