

Winston Dale Thompson, 72, of Wilmington, NC, died Monday, September 15, 2008, at Britthaven of Northchase. He was born in Brunswick County, NC, April 3, 1936, son of the late Victor and Etta Mae Gore Thompson. Mr. Thompson attended New Hanover High School and was active in the ROTC program. He served his country honorably in the United States Army, 82nd Airborne, stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. Winston was founder of Ogden Volunteer Rescue Squad and organized many rescue squads in the area. He served as Deputy Coroner in New Hanover County for fifteen years. Mr. Thompson was a Lifetime Member of the Elks Lodge and the American Legion. He was an instructor at Cape Fear Community College and an American Red Cross Instructor. He was founder of Thompson's Signs, Inc., a fifty-year business in Wilmington. Winston enjoyed dancing, fishing, hunting, camping, and Nascar. Surviving is his wife, Jane Shepard Thompson; sons, Winston Ray and wife Patti, Roy Thomas and wife Debbie, and Victor Rex and wife Robin; a brother, Victor Aaron and wife Sylvia; a sister-in-law, Gail Williams; granddaughters, Tiffany Andrews, Jillian Thompson, Amanda Thompson and niece Sarrah Caroline Williams; grandsons, Jason Williams, Joshua Thompson, Walker Thompson, Chase Thompson, and Kevin Andrews; great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Aden Andrews, Damien and Dejaro Williams; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and Aunt Lola Yopp of Sneads Ferry. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2008, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 18, 2008, at Ogden Baptist Church, 7121 Market Street, Wilmington, NC, officiated by Dr. Don Cashwell and the Rev. Ottis King. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
