Barbara Armstrong Stone July 31, 1954 – February 6, 2017 Durham, NC Dateline On Monday February 6th, Barbara Armstrong Stone, a precious child of God, departed for her new home with other believers in Christ. Barbara was born in Wilson on July 31st, 1954, the daughter of Jerome Griffith Armstrong and Doris Thorne Armstrong. Barbara accepted Jesus at Berea Presbyterian Church in Wilson. She is a graduate of Wilson Christian School. Through the years, Barbara served superbly as a loving stay-at-home mom as she raised her daughter Heather from birth through high school graduation. Barbara was also a professional nurse. Her most distinguished medical service was a nine year span at Murdoch Developmental Center in Butner, North Carolina. While at Murdoch, founded for those with profound physical or emotional challenges, she worked with the blind, the crippled, and those with personality disorders. Listening to her when she came home each day, it was apparent that each individual was special to her and that she shared in their heartaches and joys. Barbara took on other activities with joy and enthusiasm. She enjoyed cooking for neighbors and delivering food to their front door. As an ardent grower of flowers and ornamental plants, she shared cuttings and her knowledge of plants with those around her. Outdoors was her delight. She enjoyed boating and fishing, walking shore lines for shells, adventures into the woods, wild birds, sunrise and sunset, and Spring in particular. Her devotion to her mother and father was extraordinary. She was a loving and devoted wife to her husband, Tommy. We will miss her good heart, free spirit, and her child-like love for others. We will miss her offering so many wonderful prayers at mealtime. Services for Barbara will be on Friday, February 10th, at 2:00 p.m., at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home in Wilson, NC. The home of Doris Armstrong will be open on Thursday evening, from 5 until 7, for those that wish to visit. Our dear Barbara will be buried near her father’s gravesite in Evergreen Memorial Park, Wilson. Surviving family members include her daughter, Heather Edenfield in Statesboro, Georgia; her mother, Doris Armstrong in Wilson; her sister, Pamela Armstrong in Raleigh; her husband, Tommy in Durham; and her English Cocker Spaniel, Cotton Jenny. Funeral services are under the direction of Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home, Wilson, NC. Online condolences may be sent to www.thomasyelverton.com.
