Josephine Batts Pittman

Josephine “Jo” Batts Pittman August 17, 1927- December 8, 2017 Jo Pittman passed away Friday, December 8, 2017 after a brief period of declining health. Born August 17, 1927 in Wilson County, she lived most of her entire life in the community and more specifically, within an eight mile radius of her home church- Daniels Chapel Free Will Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for 71 years. She was supported throughout life by this community and in turn inspired many with her dedication to church and family. After graduating from Lee Woodard High School where she met her husband Rupert, they were married October 4th, 1946 upon his return from Naval duty in the South Pacific. Thus began her career as wife, mother, and homemaker. She and Rupert raised two sons and also spent time as house parents for the FWB Children’s Home. Jo had many talents and will be fondly remembered for her cooking skills. She cooked old school Farm to Table before it became a trend as she lived only steps away from the smoke house, the chicken house and the hog pen. She and Rupert always tended a beautiful garden and most of her dishes had her name on the bottom as she was always preparing food for others. She loved to tell the story of how she learned to make biscuits at a young age from her mother standing on a stool in front of a wood fired oven. Jo had wisdom in years and was a thoughtful advisor to many. Always grounded in faith, she enjoyed her Wednesday Bible Study and lunches with friends until just a few weeks ago. In addition to her parents, Paul and Hattie Batts, Jo was predeceased by her husband Rupert, four brothers (Paul, Jim, Archie, and Leland), and a grandson, Brian. She is survived by two sons, David (Cheryll) and Harold (Cindy), four grandchildren, Laurie, Darin (Missy), Jana, (Mike) and Julie (Gary), and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Milton (Alma), a sister in law, Edna Harrell and many nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the love and support of Jo’s church family and care givers at Parkwood Village and the dedication of friends and family over the past years that allowed her to remain active and engaged in her community. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 am Tuesday, December 12th, at Daniels Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, 4828 Frank Price Church Road, Wilson, NC 27893, with visitation at 10:00 am. Interment will follow the service in Evergreen Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Food Panty at Daniels Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Funeral services are under the direction of Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home, Wilson, NC. Online condolences may be sent to www.thomasyelverton.com.
