Mary Ellen Shirley March 10, 1920 - February 16, 2018

Mary Ellen Shirley, age 97, of Wilson, NC, passed away Friday, February 16, 2018. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2018, in Evergreen Memorial Park, Wilson, NC, with the Rev. Neil Ross of Community Bible Church, Newport News, VA officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, 1 hour prior to the service, at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home, 2704 Nash St. N, Wilson.

Ellen was born in Greene County, NC to the late Earl and Iodest Dail Skinner. She graduated from Maury High School where she was awarded a certificate of perfect attendance as she never missed a day of school in 12 years. After graduation, Ellen met and married Sgt. Richard A. Hoyt and moved to New York where she worked for Ithaca Gun Co. The company awarded her an Army-Navy Award for Excellence in Production. Upon the death of her husband, Ellen returned to Greene County to help her parents on the farm. She married Harvey Shirley and later moved to Hampton, VA and became a stay-at-home mom.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda H. Taylor of Wilson; her grandson, Glenn Taylor, Jr. of Wilson; two granddaughters, Kimberly Miller (Brian) of Wilson and Teresa Atkinson (Rod) of Raleigh; three great-grandchildren, Sara Atkinson of Raleigh, Bobby Collman of Raleigh and Ken Begin of Brockton, MA; two brothers, Bob Skinner (Gwen) of Farmville and Kenneth Skinner (Edith) of Farmville.

In addition to her parents, Ellen was preceded in death by her husbands, Sgt. Richard A. Hoyt and Harvey Shirley; a sister, Christine Stevens; three brothers, Clyde Skinner, Earl Skinner, Jr. and Carrol Skinner; a great-grandson, Corey Begin.

The Shirley family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to Dr. Christine Barton, for her special care, and also to Ellen's brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Gwen Skinner, for both time and activities spent with her.

Linda...my brothers and I remember your mother as a very special friend to our mother, Addie Gray when your parents lived in Virginia. My brothers are in Virginia and my husband and I have been in Rocky Mount since 1977. I remember your mom and her little dogs.
