Nancy Edwards Baker
June 7, 1935 – November 6, 2019
Nancy Edwards Baker, 84, of Wilson, passed away Wednesday. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 9, 2019, at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home, Wilson, NC. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Wilson, NC.
The family will receive friends Friday, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home located at 2704 Nash St. N, Wilson, NC.
Nancy was born in Johnston County, the daughter of the late Leon and Flossie Woodall Edwards. She graduated from Kenly High School and furthered her education at Wilson Community College and the Christian Writer’s Institute. Nancy worked as a bookkeeper for many years. She was a long-time member of First Free Will Baptist Church, now Connect Church, and worked in many positions in various organizations of the church. Nancy’s hobbies included writing, gardening, and needlework. She demonstrated her spirituality in day-to-day actions with others and was a good friend to people of all ages. Nancy was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Surviving are her son, Jay Matthews (Vicki Huffman) of Bridgeport, WV; one step-son, Greg Baker (Lynn) of Sims; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Matthews of Flower Mound, TX; one brother, Leon Edwards, Jr. (Grace) of Arnold, MD; three sisters, Louise Forehand of Chesapeake, VA, Bernice Sullivan (Vernon) of Ferum, VA, and Carolyn Jewell (Bob) of Richmond, VA; five step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of eleven years, Franklin “Bud” Baker; husband of forty-two years, Royce Matthews; a son, Ricky Matthews; a step-son, Larry Baker; two sisters, Juanita Edwards Aycock and Beatrice Edwards Whitehurst.
