

Richard was born on October 4, 1963 in Warren County. He attended Warren County High School then graduated from the electrical program at Wilson Community College. He served his country as a member of the National Guard and served his community as a volunteer firefighter with East Nash for 9 years. Richard worked at Edwards, Inc for 25 years where he dedicated many hours of hard work.
Richard is survived by the love of his life, Shannon Mercer Vaughan. They were married on May 21, 1994 where they built their lives together in Wilson County. He is survived by his three children; Justin Vaughan (Amy) of Wilson, Charlie Vaughan (Peyton) of Elm City, and Nathan Vaughan (Laney) of Wilson. These boys were the highlights of his life where he spent countless days watching them on a ballfield. He is survived by his two precious grandsons, Raylan Vaughan and Hudson Vaughan who he loved dearly.
He is survived by his mother, Marie Vaughan of Wilson, NC; brother, Gary Vaughan (Mitzi) of Henderson, NC; sister, Annette Burrows of Wilson, NC; mother in law, Mavis Mercer of Wilson, NC; sister in law, Melony Amerson (Brian) of Wendell, NC; nieces and nephews, Chad Burrows, Candice Howell (Matt), Emmanuel Amerson, Charlotte Amerson; great niece, Cooper Burrows; and great nephew, Maddox Howell. He is preceded in death by his father, Pete Vaughan and father in law, Stanley Mercer.
In Richard’s free time, he loved being by the ocean surrounded by his family and fur babies, Duke and Ellie. He had an adventurous heart and enjoyed rock climbing, scuba diving, and camping. Every year, he looked forward to the family camping trip at Hanging Rock.
Richard was a husband, father, son, brother, Papa, teacher, and coach. These are just a few words to describe the great man he was and how he will be remembered. His light will forever shine along the North Carolina coast and mountains.
A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, January 4, 2024 at 2 PM in the chapel of Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:45 AM to 1:45 PM at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home prior to the service.
The family would like to give thanks to Richard’s caregivers and the staff at Wilson Medical Center for all of their care and compassion during his stay.
