James was born in Oconee County to Johnnie & Ruth Johnson on December 19, 1931. He was married to Jeanette Johnson for 54 years. He worked as a contractor and farmer. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the Navy. He was a member of Hebron Christian Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers, Ronnie Johnson, Billy Johnson and Pete Johnson.
James is survived by his two children: son, James Samuel (Sammy) Johnson Jr. (Peggy), and daughter, Robin Johnson Lumpkin (Willis). He is also survived by four grandchildren: two grandsons, Daniel Bradberry (Brittany) and Caleb Lumpkin and two granddaughters, Emily Lumpkin and Caroline Lumpkin. He is also survived by two sisters, Faye Casper and Hazel Cain (Bobby).
No funeral services will be held.
