Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts to John F. Smith and M. Edna (Dingler) Smith (both deceased), Joan Eisner spent her school years in Somerville and Boston’s West Roxbury, MA suburb. She attended the Vesper George School of Art and the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston, graduating in 1953 with a degree in Commercial Art for lettering and advertising. Her most notable career achievements include being head of the display department at Jordan Marsh in Framingham in the 1950s and buyer for Rich’s Department Store in Lawrenceville, GA. She also used her artistic skills to design books detailing the history of the carnation for the 42nd International Flower Show at the New York Coliseum. After retiring, her hobbies included working as Assistant Manager for Attic Treasures, a specialty and collectibles store in Madison, GA.
She married LeRoy William Eisner, Sr on February 6, 1976, becoming a step-mother to his five adult children. She was known by family members for her many talents, including sewing, packing for movers, lettering signs, and rarely sitting still. She will always be remembered for the deep love and care she showed her husband and all family members.
Survivors include LeRoy Eisner, Jr and his wife, Dawn of Apex, NC, Tim Eisner and his wife, Dee, of Bethlehem, GA, and Shelley (Eisner) Toothill and her husband, Brian Toothill, of Sugar Hill, GA, eleven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Eisner Sr, and step-sons Paul (Chick) Eisner and Fred Eisner.
A graveside service at Woodbine Cemetery, 147 Athens Street, Jefferson, GA, will be held on Sunday, August 14th at 2:00 pm. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, GA. A celebration of her life will be scheduled and announced in the future.
