Margaret "Peggy" Smith

Margaret “Peggy” Fulmer Smith passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19, 2026, in Winder, Georgia. Born on May 2, 1948, she was the daughter of the late James Walter Fulmer and Lucille Hatchell Fulmer of Columbia, South Carolina.

Peggy met the love of her life, Robert Stewart Smith, when she was just 16 years old, beginning a love story that would span more than six decades. Together, they built a life centered around family, faith, and a deep devotion to one another, celebrating 59 years of marriage.

Peggy received an associate’s degree from the University of South Carolina in 1968. She and Robert owned and operated Eclaire Pastry Shop in Columbia, where Peggy shared her remarkable artistic talents as an award-winning cake decorator. During her career, she was an active member of the Southeastern Masters Retail Bakers Association and served as its secretary. After retiring from the bakery in 1991, Peggy worked for several years at Belk in Columbia.

Peggy approached life with optimism, creativity, and a generous spirit. She never met a holiday she didn’t love, or decorate for, and her enthusiasm made every celebration a little more special. She loved animals, especially puppies, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to someone in need. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she was an active member of her church and community.

Above all, Peggy loved her family. She adored her children and held an especially joyful place in her heart for her grandchildren. She and Robert later moved to Winder, Georgia, to be closer to their children and grandchildren and to enjoy more of the family time that meant so much to her.

Peggy is survived by her loving husband, Robert Stewart Smith, Sr.; her three children, Shelley S. DiCecco and her husband, Rob; Robert S. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Dana; and J. Bradley Smith and his wife, Christine; and her three grandchildren, Makenzie, Aiden, and Jacob. She was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Fulmer Kittrell.

Peggy will be deeply missed by her family and by the many people whose lives were touched by her kindness, optimism, creativity, and generous spirit. Her family will forever cherish the time they were blessed to have with her and the many memories she created along the way.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Winder First United Methodist Church in Winder, Georgia.
