Michael James Grabau, 56, of Hoschton, Georgia, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mike was a devoted Christian whose faith guided his life. For 10 years, he served faithfully at Hope Baptist Church, where he was known for his quiet strength, humility, and willingness to help others. Mike earned a degree in Industrial Engineering from Virginia Tech, played saxophone with the Marching Virginians, and earned his pilot’s license while in college. He maintained a lifelong love of airplanes and flying, as well as music—including bluegrass, hymns, movie scores, yacht rock, and his daughter’s piano playing. Mike spent 25 years with AT&T and was part of the early team that tested the first iPhone, a reflection of his technical expertise and dedication. Those who knew Mike will remember his dry wit, loyalty, dependability, and generous spirit. He loved deeply, supported his family wholeheartedly, and never sought recognition for the many ways he served others.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Ronald James Grabau. He is survived by his mother, Joyce Elaine Grabau; wife of 29 years, Denise Grabau; daughter, Miranda Grabau Spate and son-in-law, Jonah Spate; brother, Eric Grabau and sister-in-law, Joan Grabau; nephews, Tyler and Drew Grabau; sister, Kristen Meglaughlin and brother-in-law, Rob Meglaughlin; niece, Harper and nephew, Cooper Meglaughlin. He also leaves behind many cherished friends, church family members, colleagues, and loved ones.
A celebration of Mike’s life and faith will be held from 9am until 11am on October 3, 2026, at Smith Memory Chapel, 755 Atlanta Hwy SE, Winder, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family would like those who feel led to donate to cancer research organizations or a charity of their choice.
