Dad,
First I wanted to say, we didn’t put you in a suit and tie because we knew you’d be cursing us from heaven. It only seemed fitting to put you in your favorite band tshirt- Metallica. 

I can hear you now saying Katy Lynn dry it up and stop crying, but with a few cuss words in there. You never wanted to see me upset. 

There’s so many things that I could say but at the same time nothing can truly be put into words on how I feel or how my world has forever been changed. My world has stopped while the world around me continues on. It seems so unfair and selfishly I want you here. I know Jesus needed you more than us and it was time for you to go be with the lord, I just can’t wrap my mind around it. I shouldn’t have lost my father at 31 years old. We had so much planned. 

I want to thank you for making me the person I am. For teaching me my independence as a woman, taking the time to teach me how to do a man’s job on all the house duties. Not many women can hang tvs on the wall on their own, run cat 5 cable through their attics for their cameras, know how to check their panel box, build things, cut their own grass, get on the roof of their houses to hang their own Christmas lights,  or even know how to use the grill. But all these things I know how to do because of you. You made sure I knew how to take care of myself. You gave me my NELSON attitude as we like to call it, to stand up for myself and take no crap from anyone. Even though sometimes it back fired on you, I know deep down you loved it because it was part of you. 

I will forever miss going to concerts with you, watching you head bang and putting your hands up and signing so loud. You always had a concert going on in the living room with me and the kids and you just loved jamming out.

Grilling was your next best thing. You loved “Stankin up the neighborhood” as you called it and even once I got my own house and moved out, we would still text each other pictures of our food.

Thank you for giving me my passion of soccer. We always talked about if the World Cup ever came to the US we would be going to a game together. They come next year and I never thought in a million years I’d be going without you. Now this is something I’ll have to do in honor of you. 

I’m sure heaven is so beautiful, peaceful and bright. I’m sure you’ve already inspected how the electrical works up there and even though everything in gods presence is perfect, you’ll be trying to find a way to make it even better. I’m sure you’ve found unlimited 80’s rock music that you are rockin out too.

Thank you for being the best dad and papa. You always picked up my phone calls, was always there when I needed you, always had the advise I was looking for, or sometimes even when I wasn’t looking for any, you still gave it. You loved with your whole heart and would do anything for anyone. You could light up a room and make anyone laugh. I don’t know how I’m going to live without your presence here anymore. I just have to trust that God has a plan. You will forever be my guardian angel now. Please watch over me, the kids and the boys. I love you daddy and I hope you are resting now. I’ll see you again one day. Until then I’ll keep making you proud, I’ll keep watching over the boys, and I’ll even try to keep papa in line. Give em hell up there, keep jamming out, and stank up heaven with your grilling. I love you.

Kim was as kind as they come. He worked for my father, Tony Spann for many years until my father passed. He never hesitated to offer up a helping hand anytime we needed something and always showed up with a smile on his face. Kim would always sit and talk about my Dad with me and had so many great memories to share. They loved fishing together and tried to sneak in a trip anytime they had a job site near a body of water. I have no doubt my Dad met him at the pearly gates, rod and reel in hand. They are probably on a boat somewhere arguing over who’s catching the first, the biggest and the most. See you on the other side, Kim. You will be greatly missed. The Spann girls have shed our share of tears over your passing but find comfort in knowing you had one of your best buds waiting on you when you got there.

We were blessed to have Kim as our friend and neighbor for 22 years, and was the kind of neighbor everyone wishes for, and for that we are eternally grateful. He was either on his new deck or sitting in the side door when we came out on our deck and we’d always talk  and tell each other what we were grilling.  I’ll forever remember his graciousness and friendship,  We were blessed to be able to see his kids and grandkids grow up next to us for awhile. Kim, you will always remain our friend, we love you.

Here do I even begin?! It’s hard to believe I’m having to write this. This just seems so unreal. Thank you for giving me the three greatest gifts in my life. Our children are our greatest treasure and the best blend of both of us and I know you would agree. You have been a part of my life since I was 16 and we were best friends for most of that time. We have laughed, cried been angry and frustrated with each other but that never changed our friendship. We had a unique relationship and like you said many times people couldn’t understand how two divorced people could get along so well. We knew though that we had to have each others backs to be healthy co-parents. Seeing our kids happy was what was most important to us so we built a great friendship and relationship to help them thrive in two separate homes. John and I will continue to love and guide them while we are still on earth and we need you to be their guardian angel now from heaven! Rest easy friend and keep them laughing up there until we meet again.

Prayers to all of Kim’s family and friends. Heaven has gained a wonderful man. I have known Kim for over 40 years.  Kim was one of my best friends and I talked to him almost every week. He was the most positive person that I have ever known and he was my biggest cheerleader in life. He loved his 80’s rock bands especially Metallica.. He would send me a picture all the time of his food on the grill which was one his favorite things to do. Boy, did he love that grill!! Every year he would send both me and my daughter two dozen roses every Valentine’s Day, my birthday,  or my daughter’s birthday. That was the kind of friend he was. I just cannot believe that he is gone. He will truly be missed.

Uncle Kim was one of a kind. Every beach trip he was the one making us laugh. Whether it was his wild jokes, his big personality, or just the way he could light up a room. He had a heart bigger than the ocean, and he would truly give you the shirt off his back without a second thought. He lived to take care of others and always made sure everyone felt loved and included. When I was a kid I remember him in the kitchen cooking his famous spaghetti. Going over to his house was so much fun and I loved every second of it.  His absence will be deeply felt. I’m so grateful for the memories we shared, and I’ll carry his love and laughter with me always.

This is my favorite memory of my father him and uncle Brian took me to my first metallica concert. It was the best day of my life. We had a great time. Didn’t get home till late and still ordered pizza at 1 o’clock in the morning. And continue to jam out to Metallica in the living room. My dad was a great man and always did the best he could for his children. I love you, dad❤️

All of the Nelson family:

Kim was a great friend and awesome electrician! And, he loved each and every one of his family. He always answered the call to help me and any of my family or my friends with our personal homes, farms and or businesses.

All of us will miss his crazy laughter and humor! He always had a positive outlook about everything and everyone no matter how bad he might have been feeling or what he might have been dealing with.

Whenever the Lord touched his heart through a daily devotion or circumstance he would call me to let me know about it.

“The Kimmer” as he was called at my Farm will be missed greatly…but all of us will meet him again someday and get a hug and hear his crazy laughter again!
