Rest in peace my dearest childhood friend.  I will keep in my heart all the memories we made.  Fishing for that infamous big muskie in the back bay at 
Red Gut, catching crayfish at the river and boiling them like lobster, sneaking down to smoke under the boat houses at the river, walking to school everyday, going to gymnastics and cheerleading together....We often were mistaken for twins as we liked to dressed alike.  My family was your family and visa versa.  Although our lives brought us in different directions and we didn't see each other much, I thought of you often.  The last conversation, after you mom passed, was wonderful.  It was so good to hear your voice, hear that you were happy and just to reminisce.

I never had the pleasure of meeting you, but have been blessed beyond belief to have your wonderful daughter in my life. Such an honour to call her a friend and sister, and see her shine in the world. I hope all the love nurtured in your life may continue to germinate and grow in the next.

Dear Les, Samantha, AJ, Craig, Kristine and Jen.  My heartfelt condolences to you all.  I have been remembering Kimmy so much this week and how important a friend she was to me.
My earliest memories of hanging with Kimmy are at the Gustafson cabin on Red Gut Bay.  I remember we'd make ashtrays out of clay, dry them in the sun and present them to our parents for use. (They smoked back then).  We'd catch crayfish for fun and seine minnows with that giant net for whoever went fishing.  She'd make me swim very long distances...over to the island.  She was such a strong swimmer.  I was usually way behind her and quite scared.  I remember winters at your cabin too.  Kim once made me cross country ski from the landing to your cabin.  I didn't believe it was possible.  Our parents would check on us on snow machines but we made it on our skis.  She was my outdoor guide growing up while getting to experience all that cabin life was.
We had many sleepovers back and forth, lots of conversations about everything, lots of birthday parties, and miles and miles of bike rides around town.   In high school, we still swam together at The Pool before classes.  I was better at keeping up but no matter how hard I worked, I could never catch her in the pool.  I do credit my love of swimming to Kimmy and my attempt to catch her over all those years.
To me Kim was like a Martha Stewart in the kitchen.  I am sure she picked up these skills from her mother.  Kim would cook for her friends often and the table would always be set with some special attention.  This always impressed me because I did not understand an interest in cooking.  Friends loved visiting at Gustafson's house.  You could drop by on a Wednesday evening and there'd be a pumpernickel bread dip in the fridge waiting to be served.  Even after she moved away, Kim's return visits often came with invites to friends for great food.
We'd had only been in touch by phone over the last many years.  Our last conversation was just after her mom passed away.  She sounded well and happy and described a recent great visit with her mom and sisters.  I have been so wishing I had called more recently.  But I am thankful for a lifetime of memories.  I am thankful for Kim making me a better swimmer.  I am thankful for Kim being an active friend who kept me moving and exercising.   I am thankful for all the conversations, giggles and out-right laughter.   I am thankful for her sharing her love of the outdoors with me and even for her making me touch crayfish.  I am thankful for her making me always feel comfortable in her home as well as an honoured guest at the table with a linen napkin on my lap.   I know we will meet again someday Kimmy.  I'll know you by that great smile and you'll have a great appetizer in your hand...until then my friend.
