Passed away on Sept 11 at the age of 87. Reunited with his wife of 55 years June (MacVicar 2009), parents, Clarence and Lucille Johnson and sister in law Kay MacVicar. Will be greatly missed by his children, Jan Fleming (Dana), Ken Johnson (Daniela), Carolyn Truswell (Stephen), Alan Johnson (Carol Crooks) and his grandchildren – Stephanie Fleming, Wes Johnson (Justine Chiu), Lauren Fleming (Andrew Kovacevic), Kayla Truswell, Andrew Johnson, Emma Amlin (Ken), Riley McManus (Brandon), Laura Johnson and his brand new great granddaughter Neave Mae McManus. Fondly remembered by Kathy Johnson and cousins on both sides of his family. Richard was born in Milwaukee and at an early age moved to Montreal and eventually Windsor. He attended Patterson Collegiate and went to Queens University for Medicine, graduating in 1955. He came back to Windsor completing his Internship and residency through Wayne State University while working at Detroit Receiving and Detroit City Hospital. His practice in Internal Medicine & Nephrology was opened in Windsor in 1960. Under his care Richard treated the first patient for Acute Dialysis and subsequently started the Chronic Renal Dialysis Programme in December 1964 at Grace Hospital, the first of its kind in Canada. Having active privileges at all four hospitals, he served as Chief of Medicine and Chief of Staff at Grace Hospital until 1992. He was a Past President of Essex County Medical Society and Life Member of Ontario Medical Assoc. serving and chairing on numerous committees. He will be remembered as a dedicated doctor who cared deeply for his patients and his profession. Dick, an avid boater and traveler, owned a number of boats two of which he named “Camelot”; a nod to his love of both the play and the theatre. Dick & June were original members of the Stratford Festival and enjoyed seeing plays until such time as they were no longer able to attend. He was a Past Commodore of Windsor Yacht Club (1975) and thoroughly enjoyed himself at many events, cruises and ceremonies. He and June spent many cruises on Camelot enjoying the North Channel and the Lake Erie Islands. In his later years he greatly enjoyed playing Bridge and Friday lunches with the ROMEO’s. As per Dick’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial visiting will be held at Walter D. Kelly Life Celebration Centre (1969 Wyandotte St. E. 519-252-5711) on Sunday, September 16, 2018 from 6 to 9 pm. Visiting will continue on Monday, September 17, at the funeral home from 10 am until the time of the memorial service at 11 am. Special thanks to all the staff at Amica, as well as VON, Hospice, and Paramed for their care and support for Dick in his final days. In lieu of flowers if you so wish, please make a donation in his name to the Windsor Regional Hospital Renal Dialysis Program.
