Aitkens, William John It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of William, a very good man, on March 8, 2012 at the age of 87. Loving husband of Joan (nee Hey) for 61 years. Predeceased by his son Donald (1979). Beloved and respected father of Robert (Renee) and Joanne (Mark). A very proud and delighted grandpa to Lyric. He will be missed and fondly remembered by all his family and friends. Bill retired as District Chief of Fire Prevention after 25 years of service with both the Windsor and Sandwich West Fire Services. He was awarded the Fire Service Exemplary Service Medal by the Governor General of Canada and the Fire Service Long Service Medal. Visitation at the Walter D. Kelly Funeral Home 519-252-5711 1969 Wyandotte St. East on Wednesday, March 14 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. An internment service will be held at Victoria Memorial Gardens on Thursday, March 15 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Online condolences may be left at

I was sad to hear about the passing of Mr. Aitkens. I remember him as a kind and gentle man. He always seems to have a little joke and a smile for us girls when I visited the house. My prayers are with the family during this sad time.
